Traditional Japanese tattoos have their own version of the Snake lady, and she is called “Kiyohime”.
According to Japanese folklore, Kiyohime was the daughter (in some versions, a widow) of Shoji, the village landlord on the Hidaka riverbank. Kiyo’s family were wealthy enough to accommodate the lodging of traveling priests passing by on their way to a shrine famous for ascetic practices.
One day, a handsome priest named Anchin visited & fell in love with the beautiful Kiyohime. After some time, he overcame his passions & refrained from seeing her again. This got Kiyohime furious & pursued her ex-lover in rage, turning into a large monstrous serpent as she goes. Running away, Anchin reached a temple called “Dojo-ji” & hid under the temple bell with the help of the priests. Unfortunately, Kiyohime smelled him hiding inside & coiled herself around the bell & banged it loudly til it beltched into a large fire that melted the bell & killed Anchin. And that’s how the story ended. :-O
