But in these pictures, and in many others you can find on the internet, you will see people smiling or relaxing. Suspension body art has developed itself these past years in parallel of tattoo art and body modifications. Many performances of suspensions are visible in tattoo conventions, and they even have their own events, suspension conventions. Suspension body art is at first sight very extreme and shocking. But for those who are practicing it, it can be very spiritual. According to website, “The act of suspension is hanging the human body from (or partially from) hooks pierced through the flesh in various places around the body.” Suspension body art is very ancient and was used for rites of passage and other kind of spiritual ceremonies. It is also considered as performance art and entertainment. This act is challenging the limits of the body and of the spirit and if some are doing it for the adrenaline, some consider that the experience is nearly mystic. Yes, pain is included. But just like in tattoo, piercing and other body mods. And remember, it is a personal choice. Suspension is making some people happy, and they can’t be judged for that.
