These Photos Prove That Beauty Is Not Only Ink Deep

Stories
A powerful photography project intends to denounce the discrimination against tattooed people by showing the beautiful stories underneath.
Beauty Is Not Only Ink Deep was created by Niall Patterson, a photographer from Birmingham, UK.
« The idea originally came to me when I decided to have a tattoo myself. » he told us.
« Suddenly, I came across a lot of negative feedback, from the web but also my family. So I decided to launch a project to prove to myself and to others that beauty is not only ink deep. The people who are working with me are beautiful in their own right, tattoos or no tattoos. »
Niall Patterson studied photography before beginning a freelance career. He started shooting friends and bands, but also hip hop dancers and tribal culture in Ethiopia. His meetings and travels made him wondering what beauty was, especially for those who choose to cover their bodies in art. Do they ink their bodies in the name of beauty, or does it mean much more? In 2012, he decided to find out. He connected with the tattoo community to find models with stories to share. The goal of his pictures is to capture tattoos but also emotions and souls, to break all the prejudices against « people with tattoos » and to tell the stories of those who took the control of their lives and bodies. Each model is interviewed, and personal quotes added on the photos.
« I have started the project just with the aim of photographing a few of my friends, bands and some artists I admired. Now, I want to push it as far as possible. »
Niall has started a Kickstarter campaign to publish his photographies in a book and reach even more tattooed people to show their beauty.
« There are so many incredible stories. From love stories to stories of great sadness. I think one of my favourites is the one of this guy with a hand tattoo that show the time it was when his girlfriend’s train came in, at their first meeting. It reminded me so much of an old black and white movie ! »
You too can get in touch with Niall to be part of the project, by following him on Facebook.
« It has been a great experience so far, hearing the clients stories behind their ink and the positive feedback from the public. All this made me decide on getting myself inked and am currently working on my sleeve ! »
Indeed, these stories and beautiful images will truly make you see that beauty is not only ink deep. And make you want more tattoos.
