Tattoos will no longer keep you from getting your dream job

Let’s be positive for a moment towards the visible tattoo in the workplace. As you know, many companies—and not just in the Western world—are becoming more accepting towards tattoos. Some don’t mind tattoos on the arms and legs, even the visible ones, while some are fine with them as long as it won’t be seen in work clothes. While many still aren’t keen with neck face, and hand tattoos—and I can see the point, it’s not as difficult to get away with them anymore. No more pesky physical exams and all that. I heard that there are jobs that won’t mind any tattoos as long as you pass a drug test.

A mere eight or nine years ago, I rarely see professionals with tattoos and I was still under the impression that these things were taboo—thus intriguing me even more. But nowadays, they’re like news about the Kardashians. They’re everywhere. My aunt—a 37-year old full-time mom of three—even shared her desire to get a nice, little tattoo on her wrist. I was surprised that she even brought up white ink and the possibility of getting them.

But on the other side of the coin, I can still think of companies and cities who won’t hire anyone with the slightest trace of ink. Let’s assume that you belong in a job field where tattoo acceptance is a rarity and you’re worried that your next job might not be very tolerant. The only way to compromise here is to get a tattoo in the safe zones—all the parts of your body that can be normally covered by the type of clothes you wear at work. In Asian countries though, especially in the South East, those who are looking in to moving abroad or into a wider and more successful career path are wary of getting tattoos and even piercings. They’re bound to become stumbling blocks in medical exams and are good as positive drug test results. Read more here about the topic of visible tattoos in the workplace.

Social media is your personal go-to friend for tattoo ideas

After Cara Delevingne unveiled her lion finger tattoo, many of her Instagram followers—men and women—were inspired to get similar ones too, seeing how nice it looked on her. The same tattoo went on to be featured in some ads Cara appeared in at the time, just like some of the other tattoos she has. The same happened with Rihanna and the underboob tattoo she has that featured the winged Egyptian goddess Isis. The daring Barbadian beauty arose a trend that women felt strong about getting. Because aside from the fact that under the breasts is a very enticing place for a woman to get a tattoo, it won’t really hinder their careers because they don’t wear crop tops at work anyway.

The tattoo style rainbow is still gaining colors

A decade ago, dotwork tattoos might have sounded like some kind of ancient Oriental torture to you. But these days, the demand for alternative styles like dotwork and watercolour are insatiable. These styles opened even more doors for artists to explore other styles and amalgamate them to come up with something new. You no longer have to settle for the standard traditional American/Japanese, etc most tattoo parlours only offer then. You now have a still-growing list of styles to choose from and an even wider range of designs.

Your tattoo may no longer be relevant to you in the long run, but at one point it did

This is the most crucial thing. Whatever tattoo you get, it’s always going to be a part of you. However spontaneous, dumb, boring, random, or generic your tattoo is, it’s always going to be a part of you. Your tattoos—even the bad ones—are chapters in the beautiful book that is your life. Your little kid will point to them one day and ask you about them. That’s when you look back and think about what a crazy kid you once was and all the good times, the bad, and the painful thing you once went through. You’re going to smile and hope that your kids will handle the mistakes they’ll make when they grow up better than you did. And you better direct these kids to the right tattoo artist to get their first taste of ink!
