A Brazilian Tattoo Artist Is Turning Scars Into Something Beautiful

One of the best things about tattoos is the way they can turn something ugly, like a scar from a traumatic incident, into art.

Flavia Carvalho is a tattoo artist based in Brazil who is doing a very special job on domestic violence victims by giving them the gift of skin art by offering tattoo over the scars they have received from their distressing experiences with a design of their choice.

This project is beautifully worded with the title "A Pele da Flor" or ‘the skin of the flower.’ According to Flavia, the phrase is originally a Portuguese expression that pertains to one's strong feelings in the surge of difficulty or suffering. She added that it also ‘alludes to the fact that all of us women are like flowers and deserve to have our skin protected and embellished.’

What inspired her to do this? Flavia shares with Huffington Post how she once had a female client who came to her asking for a tattoo to cover up scars on her abdomen. When asked how she got them, the client shared how a man stabbed her with a switchblade when she refused his advances. “Each tattoo would act as an instrument for empowerment and a self-esteem booster,” she says.

She soon began proposing it to non-government organizations, earning praise and support for the most of it. Flavia is currently working with The Municipal Secretariat of Policies for Women to establish a partnership with the Women's Police Station in order for women in the area to be aware that there is somewhere and someone they can run to in times of distress. The female tattoo artist will also be participating in Women's National Day in November and the Pink October events this year.

Awesome artwork!

It's amazing what tattoos can do to people. I've seen how tattoos have enhanced beauty, given confidence, and empowered people. And I guess that's what art can do to people. Especially a piece of art one can take with them for life. It not only changes how you look, but it makes an impact to how you see yourself and how you feel about yourself, regardless of what others will say.
