Tons of mind-blowing blackwork tattoos have been created over the course of this year alone, and since December is almost at a close, it seemed appropriate to showcase some of the best large-scale pieces done in this amazing and diverse style of tattooing. So, get ready to be wowed, because here are some of the best illustrative and geometric blackwork masterpieces to have been inked onto peoples' skin in 2016.
An intense black out bodysuit by Chester Lee @oddtattooer
One of Nissaco's incredibly bold pieces of abstract blackwork @nissaco
Some of Kelly Violet's amazing illustrative blackwork @kellyviolence
The best part about blackwork is the many flavors in which it comes. It can be used to create both illustrative and abstract imagery. Or in some cases, no imagery at all. Some incredibly notable designs have surfaced this year. Houston Patton's turbulent seascape backgrounded by one of his signature castle silhouettes is the best piece of illustrative blackwork to be created over the course of the last 12 months. Kelly Violet's sleeve full of animal skulls and flora is a close contender though. When looking at these two masterpieces, the wide range of aesthetics within this genre of tattoos becomes glaringly apparent. Some artists exercise a more solid approach, while others dabble in fine linework and hints of stippling.
An amazing castle near a raging sea by Houston Patton @ttowerempire
Some of Lewis Ink's mind-blowing geometric blackwork @lewisink
More of Nissaco's astounding large-scale blackwork @nissaco
A gorgeous series of blackwork mandalas by Alexis Calvié @alexiscalvie
While the illustrative possibilities of this style are endlessly impressive, it would be doing many of these pieces a disservice not to remark on the more abstracted imagery that many blackwork tattooists profess. Here, for example, there are two very different but equally excellent large-scale examples from Nissaco's jaw-dropping portfolio. Lewis Ink's geometric sleeve demonstrates how a cover-up can be merged with ornate patterns to create an astounding piece of body art. Speaking of cover-ups, Chester Lee's blackout chest-piece is unbelievably intense as well as powerful monochromatic pronouncedness. Lastly, Alexis Calvié series of mandalas illustrates just how fantastic spiritual geometric looks in solidly sable.
If you were blown away by any of these blackwork sleeves, make sure to check out more on the artists' Instagrams. Also, if you're looking to black out an entire appendage or get some excellent illustrative body art in this versatile style of tattooing, consider having on of them execute it.
