The on-going feud between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. just intensified a little bit. The two have been jawing at each other for months, with each of them issuing challenges to the other, and McGregor openly campaigning for the fight, even going so far as to naming his price.
Well, McGregor took this rivalry a step closer to becoming a reality by obtaining a boxing license in the state of California. Ariel Helwani and Brett Okamoto have both reported this story to be true, and they are some of the most reliable sources in the fighting industry.
While it might seem like this would be a step in the right direction toward making this dream fight a reality, many people believe this to be just a trolling move. Considering McGregor is still under contract in the UFC, it's very unlikely that they would allow him to box in this mega-fight, potentially ruining their top star.
Plus there is the fact that the license is for the state of California. Mayweather seems to only want to fight in Las Vegas, Nevada anymore, and after the Nevada Athletic Commission fined McGregor due to his press conferences for the fight with Nick Diaz, McGregor has gone on record saying that he will never fight in the state again.
There are a ton of wrinkles to this story, and even more reasons why this mega-fight will never pan out, but wouldn't it be crazy if it did? And this was a step towards legitimizing the dream? We can all dream, right?
Here's hoping that one day we will see the fight. I'm doubtful, but it would be pretty rad.
What about you? Do you think this fight will ever pan out? If it does, who do you think would win? Let us know in the comments.
